Your exciting micro-adventure on Germany's highest peak

Glaciers have always fascinated people. They are natural wonders, sensitive ecosystems, water reservoirs, places of beauty, permanence and change all at the same time.

The Nördlicher Schneeferner on the Zugspitzplatt is one of the last four glaciers in Germany and an excellent illustrative example of current climatic developments and geological background. Learn everything about the wonderful natural phenomenon of glaciers!

Join your VIVALPIN glacier expert on a journey through the history of the earth. You will discover traces of ice from the Würm Ice Age (11,000 years ago) to the present day: Moraines and permafrost, glacial lakes, fossils from a bygone era and much, much more. On the approx. three-hour excursion you will learn many interesting facts about glaciers, hike over glacial ice and explore the traces of glaciers.

Meeting point on the viewing terrace of Germany's highest peak Short outline of the history of the earth at the live panorama of the Zugspitze Descent with the glacier lift to the Sonnalpin Excursion over moraines and glacial striations with many surprises to the glacial ice of the Northern Schneeferners

No special requirements or previous knowledge necessary. On the excursion, about 100 meters of altitude are covered in partly pathless but technically easy terrain. On request, the excursion can also be conducted in English.

I have always been fascinated by glaciers and their development. No wonder, because in my mountain home there are three glaciers that change year after year and whose development I have been following for many years. The traces left by the glaciers include everything from primary rock (which doesn't actually occur in the region) to thousands of years old fossils that make researchers' hearts beat faster."
