Ski tours Gran Sasso d'Italia
Fantastic ski touring trip with culture and mascarpone powder
Abruzzo is part of the Apennines, a mountain range that stretches from the north to the south of the Italian boot. There are several areas that are ideal for ski tours, first and foremost the Gran Sasso d'Italia with the 2,912-meter Corno Grande and the Majella Nature Park with its many 2,000-meter peaks.
A good base for fantastic ski tours in Abruzzo is the (summer) tourist resort of Caramanico Terme. Although it is only 600m above sea level, the snow line is only slightly higher in many winters.
Among the classics in the Majella Nature Park are the ski tours to the 2,143m-high Monte Blockhaus (which is actually its name) or the 2,027m-high Monte Rapina. The 2,793m-high Monte Amaro is much more challenging: here you can expect an ascent of over 1,500m and, as a highlight, a 1,000m descent through the Amaro gully with an average gradient of over 30°.
The highest peak in the Apennines, the 2,912m Corno Grande, is not a classic ski tour summit. The summit structure rises steeply and is interspersed with rocks above the Campo Imperatore plateau. The popular ski tour destinations there are Monte Aquila (2,494m) and Monte Camicia (2,564m), which often offer the finest firn and mascarpone powder descents.
Mascarpone Powder: This is not a new type of snow - the term is taken from an article in the DAV Panorama borrowed. But it describes this firm yet loose powder snow, which gives a lot of feedback, quite well. The southern sun and the humidity of the nearby sea could be responsible for this, but no matter: riding it is a special treat.

"Abruzzo, with the Majella National Park and the Gran Sasso d'Italia, is always worth a ski touring trip. The peaks are alpine, the descents in the best touring terrain are long and varied. You will also experience the best food and great hospitality. In recent winters, Abruzzo has also been extremely snow-sure, with usually greater snow depths than at comparable altitudes in the Alps"
