Glacier & alpine touring course: ice training at the Braunschweiger Hütte
Prusik, spoc, loose pulley or Swiss pulley - you should know and be able to do all of these if you want to be able to ski independently on glaciers and on alpine tours. Our glacier & alpine touring courses for beginners are the perfect platform for this. In the summit world of the Ötztal, you will quickly and effectively learn the necessary know-how for your planned alpine and ice tours.
Your training ground: the Karlesferner glacier
Right on the doorstep of the Braunschweiger Hütte (2,759 m) is the Karlesferner, a true Eldorado for mountaineers. The ice terrain is ideal for training: Short approaches and almost always perfect ice conditions allow for intensive training.
As practice is best learned on a real tour, we crown the course with an ascent of a surrounding peak, such as the Linker Fernerkogel (3,278 m).
Course content: From crevasse rescue to tour planning
Under the guidance of state-certified mountain and ski guides, you will learn the basics for easy to medium-difficulty alpine tours:
Safety technologyRoping up on the glacier in teams of two, three and four. Setting fixed points and building belays in ice and firn.
Crampon technologyEfficient walking with crampons in firn and ice. Learning the vertical and frontal crampon technique.
Spaltenbergung & RescueHow do I rescue someone from a crevasse? There are numerous tried and tested methods for this in makeshift mountain rescue, all of which you can learn and use. The best known are the loose pulley and the Swiss pulley. Modern backstops such as the Spoc make handling easier.
Tour planningEvery ice and high-altitude tour needs to be particularly well planned and prepared. Orientation, meteorology and risk management are particularly important.
Base & comfort
The Braunschweig hut serves as our cozy base camp. Here you can enjoy excellent food and an authentic alpine atmosphere - and best of all, the glacier is just a stone's throw away.

"Experience is the key to success on alpine tours. That's why I try to pass on as much of my personal experience as possible to my guests on the alpine touring courses.
It's not just about learning techniques, but especially about correctly assessing the different situations on glaciers and in the high mountains."
