Would you like to learn the techniques of high-altitude mountaineering on an ice course? High up in the Krimml Achental (Venediger Group) lies the Warnsdorf hut - the ideal VIVALPIN base for well-founded Ice and glacier courses. At an altitude of 2,336 m, this „Adlerhorst“ serves as the perfect base camp: in just 45 minutes we can reach the eternal ice from the Warnsdorfer Hütte.
Ideal training ground on the Krimmler Kees
The site at the Krimmler Kees in the heavily glaciated Venediger group offers ideal conditions for fast learning. Under the professional guidance of your state-certified mountain guide, you will learn and consolidate the most important techniques for your planned alpine and glacier tours:
- Safe Crampon walking in different terrain (frontal and vertical pointing technique, ascent, descent, crossings)
- Effective Ice axe techniques (stepped picks, support picks, anchor picks, etc.).
- Standard methods of Spaltenbergung (fixed points in firn and ice, loose roll, team pull, self-mountaineering technique).
- Use of rope clamps for makeshift mountain rescue
Thanks to the practical training, you can make rapid progress and prepare yourself perfectly for your private dream tours.
Aim of the course: The Großvenediger firmly in view
Our common goal is to prepare you for the Independently carry out simple alpine tours and glacier tours to get fit. A classic tour destination after this course could then be, for example, the neighboring Be Großvenediger (3,657m). You will learn the necessary techniques and skills on the ice course.
Equipment & requirements
For your first steps on ice, we provide you with modern rental equipment from EDELRID (climbing harness, helmet, crampons, ice axe, ice screws, rope clamps, carabiners and ropes). You should bring suitable shoes with a waterproof shaft and a sturdy treaded sole.
What you should bring with you:
- Previous knowledge: None required - ideal for absolute beginners.
- Condition: Endurance for ascents of up to 800 meters in altitude.
- Motivation: Enjoy learning and experiencing the high mountain world.
Comfort in seclusion
The Warnsdorfer Hütte impresses with alpine comfort and excellent food. To save your energy for the training on the ice, we use a comfortable cable car for the 20 km ascent into the high mountains. Jeep shuttle.

Course content: Equipment know-how for glacier tours, roping up, self- and companion safety on alpine tours, crevasse rescue, glacier training, walking with crampons, use of ice tools, first aid, alpine dangers
1st day: Meeting point at the Krimml Waterfalls parking lot, ascent or shuttle to Warnsdorfer Hütte, knot tying, preparation for crevasse rescue and tour planning, theory
2nd-3rd day: Learning by doing: glacier, equipment & meteorology, tour planning & risk management, objective and subjective dangers, summit ascent
Note on program changes: All courses and guided tours are conscientiously organized and carried out in accordance with the safety standards of the Vivalpin Mountain and Ski School with qualified specialists (e.g. mountain and ski guides, mountain hiking guides, etc.). The provisional tour program may be adjusted for safety-related reasons, such as bad weather, dangerous conditions, unforeseen natural events or inadequate conditions of the participants. The final program will be decided by the guide on site.
